Bathroom Renovation - A Step by Step Guide

Bathrooms are one of the smallest rooms in the house and they are also one the most costly to renovate. Bathroom renovation is a job that, if done well, can add value to a home and a great space full of design and light.

Safety Bed Rail

Bathroom design

Safety Bed Rail

Bathroom design is the first area of your bathroom renovation you need to get right. Just replacing the existing bathroom with the same design may not be enough. The key to great bathroom design is to design it with the people that are going to use it in mind. However be sure that your bathroom design also has a general use factor as well. For example: If you were designing a bathroom for families you could still design the bathroom with easy access to the shower and bath. This would ensure that the design would also work for people with limited mobility. This means if you decide to sell your home or if you are renovating for profit your design has a wider market appeal. Great bathroom design also uses the space well, taking into account the light or window space, size of fittings, and drainage options. Draw out a plan to scale and right down the sizes of your room. Mark the existing drainage points and then and water inlet points. Write down a wish list of the bathroom fittings to need and want with their sizes. Now marry the two together and see what fits. Note: Most bathroom drainage and water inlet points can be moved but this does come at extra cost.

Bathroom remodel

If you have decided to do the work yourself or part of the work it is time to hire a skip bin and pull out the old bathroom. If your home was made pre 1980 you may have fibro bathroom wall linings with asbestos in it and great care will need to be taken. You will need some full body disposable overalls, eye protection, and quality dust mask. Check with your local building authority or council regarding the regulation on bathroom asbestos wall lining removal.

Remove everything except the plumbing. If you keep the bathroom plumbing in place you will not have to turn the water off for the whole house. Also you will need to jack hammer the floor tiles up and the sand and cement bed that they are laid on.

Bathroom Renovation and construction

Bathrooms must be construction properly from the ground up to ensure that the finished job is correct and true. This also ensures the design and look of the bathroom will have a great finish

The Bathroom Renovation Process

Install water and drainage pipe and electrical wires. Install wall lining and ceiling and then install the bath hob and bath. Waterproof the floor and shower and bath recess. Correct the fall of the floor with sand and cement ready for tiling. Lay floor and wall tiles and then grout. Install new bathroom vanity, fittings, and taps - install new electrical. Paint ceiling and final clean.Step one - Plumbing and electrical

At this point all new plumbing is installed for clean hot and cold water and drainage. Careful attention needs to be taken when positioning the new plumbing so that the plumbing fittings are correct when the tiling is finished. For example: To centre a fitting in a shower recess you must take into consideration the thickness of the wall board, tile glue and tile so the fitting will be centred after the tiles are in place. The same applies to installing drainage pipes for a toilet; the wall lining and tile thickness must be taken into account so the pipe is in the correct position when the toilet is installed after tiling. Also rough in the any new electrical wires without connecting them to the mains power.

Step two - Install wall and ceiling linings

Install your 6mm wall lining being careful to nail the fibro board every 150mm without nailing into the new pipes and electrical wires. The best way is to measure and mark the pipe and wire layout onto your new wall board with a pencil as you go. Screw up (or nail) the ceiling lining, plasterboard is the most common. However if you are laying your tiles from floor to ceiling do not install the cornice as this is best done after tiling. If you are not tiling to the ceiling go ahead and install the cornice after the wallboard and ceiling lining have been installed. Also if your bath is not freestanding you can now make up the frame and install the bath. Ensure the bath is installed correctly allowing for the thickness of the tiles and glue.Be sure to check all linings and pipes before you continue with your bathroom renovation.

Step three - Waterproof your bathroom

Waterproof your bathroom floor, shower recess, and around the bath. When waterproofing the floor ensure that the waterproofing comes 100mm up the walls. The shower recess will need to be waterproofed 100mm above the shower rose outlet. Also the bath should be waterproofed 100mm above the lip of the bath right around and to the floor. At the doorway install a 25 x 25mm aluminum angle glued into place with quality silicone and waterproof into the lip. Your whole bathroom should now the tanked, so the all water will only go down a drain. Bathroom waterproofing tip: waterproofing is an easy job but quality and accuracy is most important.

Step four - Lay in the cement screed for the floor.

Before the floor tiles can laid the floor must be smooth and fairly flat with a slight fall to the drainage outlet. To do this you must use sand and cement mix and it is best to add a waterproofing agent into this as well. With a level, set the floor level at the doorway. Use the top aluminum angle as the finished floor level and measure down the thickness of the tile plus 10mm for the glue. Mark right around the bathroom with a level and then screed in your sand and cement mix with a 1 to 3 degree fall to the top of the drain outlet. Take your time and get it right with the finished level as smooth as possible. When the sand cement mix has set but is not dry (you can walk on it but you it is still a bit soft) rub it over with a house brick. This will remove all the small highs and lows and check with a level as you go. Let the bathroom floor fully dry and then you should have a great surface to tile onto. Tip: the more work you put into the floor screed the easier your tiling will be.

Step five: Tile floor and walls

Lay your tiles on the floor first and then grout. Then lay your wall tiles making sure that they are level as you lay. Once the bathroom tiles have been cut and laid, grout all your tiles and then buff the tiles clean.

Step six: Install plumbing fitting and fixtures

Install all your plumbing fittings and taps. Also fit all your towel rails and soap holders. Fit your new bathroom vanity making sure it is level and sealed around the top with silicone and also seal around the bath. Tip: make sure they are in the right place before you drill into your tiles.

Step seven: painting, and cleaning - enjoy

Paint your ceiling and do a final clean making sure everything is fitted correctly and that there are no leaks in your plumbing. - Enjoy your new bathroom.

Wooden Bench Making in 6 Easy Steps

Although you may think it is really more difficult than it really is, bench making can be done in 6 simple steps. After we have gathered the needed materials and tools we can do bench making in no time. We can make ourselves a nice, simple and safe wooden bench; one that will be both functional and beautiful and something you will be sure to get compliments on and a great conversation piece. After all, what's better than saying, Yeah, I made that!"

Safety Bed Rail

Bench making is easier with these six steps.

Safety Bed Rail

1. First, we start off by measuring the frame of the bench seat to our desired dimensions, cut them, and then tack-nail them together. Bench making includes drawing a curve line on the side pieces lengthways and cutting them using a jigsaw before attaching them together. This forms the seat shape. We may also form it as we see fit.

Then cut and sand the seat slats and mark their face boards. Screw the seat frame tightly together. Glue and nail the slats to the frame, beginning from the back. A ¾ inch vertical spacer will help. A good bench making design is providing a slight slat overhang on the front.

2. Second, we come to the screwing portion of bench making. Glue and screw front legs to our seat frame by first pre-drilling and applying countersink holes for screws to fit in. Do the same with the hind legs.

3. Third is sanding. Bench making is also about safety so we round sharp corners and sand the seat face and legs to smoothen all surfaces. This avoids board grains or fibers from sticking out and hurting the user. Sanding also creates better-looking seat surfaces.

4. Fourth, we deal with the back rest in bench making. Get the top rail measurement and add a space 5/8 inch from the rail top to the back part of the hind leg. This should give a 1/8 inch space at the bottom of the rail between the back part of the leg and the rail.

Then place the router tenons or tongues and vertical back slats on one end. There should be a fitting groove at the top rail. The tongues should easily fit into the groove. Glue the slats and nail them.

5. Fifth, bench making with armrests requires putting wood cleats 3 1/2 by 3/4 by 3'4 inches to support the front legs. Make a 3/16 inch hole with a drill at the midpoint of the cleat and have it attached through the bracing at the corner.

The armrest should measure from the back of the hind leg to some inches off the front leg. An armrest notch should receive the leg support of the back rest. Drill a hole and countersink atop the front cleat piercing the armrest then glue and screw.

6. Then, sixth is final sanding. Bench making should end with all surfaces, ends, and corners smoothen before painting. There we have our nice, simple, and sturdy bench.

How To Install A Tonneau Cover

A tonneau cover is an important tool for people who drive their trucks on a daily basis. It will protect your cargo, and will also help you conserve fuel. A locking tailgate is a device which helps keep the cover closed. In this article I will show you the first steps for installing a cover. In this example we will be using a Ford F-350, but the same basic rule applies to most trucks. Your cover is likely to come with a manual, and you will want to refer to it also.

Safety Bed Rail

The first thing you want to do is remove the cover and the accessories from the package. You want to make sure you follow the instructions of the manufacturer when doing this. You may also want to use a soft cloth in order to keep the rolled top from moving back and forth while inside the container. Connect the lock arm onto the bottom of tonneau handle. Once you have installed it the lock should be able to reach over the edge in order to lock the top. You can test the lock by using a key to make sure it works.

Safety Bed Rail

Now you want to take the cannister and place it on the rail of the truck. Place it in the area where you want it to be, but make sure you don't connect it right now. Take off the side channels and other things from the packaging to insure it is the correct length and will fit on the side rails. When you unroll the cover, it will move back inside channels that are attached to the side rails of the truck. This stops the cover from becoming loose due to wind. Take a measurement of your truck bed to make sure the channels will fit.

If the channels are too long, you may need to cut off the parts you don't need. Once you've attached them you want to make sure the tailgate has enough space to close. You will need to mark the spots on the rails where you will be placing the screws. You can add a clamp to the track while you are taking your measurements to make sure they are accurate. A grease pencil can be used to mark the locations. After this you will want to take off the clamps and get ready to drill the holes. Make sure you drill them in the correct location.

After this you will want to attach the track onto the truck bed rail. You will need to use screws for this. These are the basic steps for installing a tonneau cover, and should give you a good idea of what you will need to do.

Drop in Truck Bed Liners - 5 Advantages

Drop in truck bed liners are an easy way to protect your truck bed from dings and corrosion. Any kind of hauling is a chance to scratch your bed paint and start the downward rust spiral. Use your truck for hauling and keep it looking good with a bed liner. But why would you choose a drop in liner rather than a spray on liner or some other liner?

Safety Bed Rail

Some Advantages Of Drop In Bed Liners

Safety Bed Rail

1. Drop in liners are custom made to fit your truck. No "universal fit" liners, but a true custom fit for your model truck. The downside is that older trucks or odd trucks will have no liner available for those models.

2. Plastic liners are thick and very tough, virtually indestructible. Haul most any rough cargo and these liners will stand up to the job. If after much hard use the liner needs replacing, that's easy to do. In contrast, a spray on liner is "permanent" so if it sustains serious damage it must be repaired since it can't be replaced.

3. A thick plastic liner cushions the bed from impact damage. What would dent and ding an unprotected bed may do no damage at all to a plastic liner. The thick plastic spreads the load over a larger area and prevents dents.

3. A custom bed liner looks good and maintains it's good looks over a long time. A bed liner actually can enhance the look of your truck. Change that bland painted look to a cool custom liner look.

4. Works well in any kind of weather. Neither snow, sun, rain or mud will bother this liner. Plus it's easy to clean with just a quick wash off with a hose. Just make sure the bed drains work so water isn't trapped under the liner.

5. Cheap is good. Compare a drop in liner to a spray on liner and you'll usually find the plastic liner is considerably less expensive. Custom liners come in different designs, not all are one piece. Some are made in parts with a bottom piece that's usually thick rubber and snap in side pieces. Either design is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace when worn and damaged.

Especially if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive bed liner that stands up to the hardest use, a custom drop in bed liner may be the best choice for your truck.

Elderly Care at Night

If you are worried about your elderly loved ones at night, you no longer need to fear for their safety. The following is a list of products that will keep your loved ones safe and out of harms way during the night.

Safety Bed Rail

Disposable Bed Sensor

Safety Bed Rail

Many seniors get disoriented during the night time hours, and some will get out of bed and wander the house. This puts them at an increased risk for walking into furniture, falling down stairs, and seriously injuring themselves. A great product to help them stay safe is the disposable bed sensor. This pad goes across the mattress, when your loved one tries to get up, a sensor will send an alarm. This alarm will either wake them up, or it can alert you if you are sleeping in the next room.

BedCaddie

Many seniors like to sit up and read in their bed in the late night hours or early morning. When you are trying to push yourself up to sitting, you can easily lose your balance and fall right out of bed. The BedCaddie is a great tool to help seniors sit up in bed and is designed to look like a ladder, and you simply grab the tiers on it until you have pulled yourself up to sitting. It's a simple way to make your bed time reading and activities more enjoyable.

Adjustable Bed Rail

If you are concerned about you or your loved one falling out of the bed during the night, a bed rail is the best way to keep safe in bed. These adjustable bed rails not only work for keeping you in bed at night, you can also use them to help support yourself as you climb in and out of bed. Since we are often groggy in the morning, it helps to have a support bar close by as you try to regain your balance.

Slipper Socks

Many seniors are susceptible to falls on slippery surfaces during the day, and when they need to start getting up in the night to use the restroom, it can be quite dangerous. The slippery bathroom floor and dim lights during the night can cause seniors to fall and bump their head or break a bone. Prevent slips during the night by wearing slipper socks to bed which have slip resistant tread on the bottom, giving you a little extra grip on slippery surfaces.

Incontinence Pads

As the body ages, many of the organs are unable to maintain their strength and they start to lose their ability to function properly. Seniors often struggle with their bladder as it no longer has strong walls that hold in the urine. This causes incontinence problems, which can be a real issue during the night since it takes you longer to pull yourself out of the bed and make your way to bathroom. If you have trouble with incontinence during the night, you need to purchase some incontinence pads so you can rest well knowing you won't be wetting the bed or trying to find the bathroom in the middle of the night.

AbleRise Bed Assist

Another great product to help you get in and out of bed is the AbleRise Bed Assist has a support bar that you can use to pull yourself in and out of bed and it also includes a pocket where you can hold your book, television remote control, and even your telephone.

Personal Alarm

If you do fall out of bed, you need help to pull yourself back up, or you will need emergency care if you have broken bones or cut open your head. The Posey Personal alarm is a great way to help you stay safe during the night time hours. It has a magnetic pull cord that will sound when tugged and it will emit a loud alarm to alert your loved ones in the next room.

Kids Safety: Choosing the Best Loft Beds Furniture

Loft beds are actually very popular these days, especially among children. They are great to look at, especially if they are painted in bright colors; save a lot of space; have become more affordable; and possess plenty of designs to choose.

Safety Bed Rail

However, they can also be potentially dangerous. Hundreds of kids have already been rushed to emergency rooms after falling from several feet off the ground.

Safety Bed Rail

To prevent this scenario, it is important you can practice home safety. You can begin with the following:

1. Know when to use this type of bed. There is actually a more appropriate age for your child to start using a loft bed. It is best if you can give him one when he already knows how to climb the stairs and behave once he is already on top. Children who are below four to five years old are far better off sleeping in a much lower bed, preferably close to the parents.

2. Install the bed properly. One of the reasons why children meet accidents and injuries is because of the improper installation of the bed. The bed kit comes with directions, which you have to follow to a T. If you are uncomfortable installing the bed on your own, you can always request for an installation expert. The bed should not shake when someone climbs up.

3. Determine the maximum weight. Loft beds have their maximum weight capacity. Usually, it is 200 pounds. Though kiddos are generally small, they may fill the top bed with so many things, causing it to collapse.

4. Check the rails. Never purchase any bed that does not come with guard rails. Otherwise, your child is very prone to falling and suffering from injuries. The rail should not be too far from the mattress, and they should be at least three to five inches in height. The guard rail opening, on the other hand, should be less than three inches, preventing the head from getting caught in between the rails.

5. Do not place anything on the stairs or ladder. Remove clothing or any material blocking the stairs or the ladder. Get rid of coat hooks.

6. Teach your kids to be careful. You can do so much for the loft beds. If your kids would continue playing around, they are still keeping themselves close to danger. Inform them of the many dangers of horse-playing on loft beds. That will also make them responsible bed owners.
